Yorkshire Games Festival

British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) to partner on 5-day event

Wednesday, 18th April, 2018, Bradford, UK: After two successful editions celebrating the diverse world of games from within the UK’s National Science and Media Museum in the heart of Bradford, we’re excited to announce that the Yorkshire Games Festival will return for a momentous third outing in early 2019.

The five day event will run from Wednesday 6th February through to Sunday 10th February and will play host to a number of firsts for the festival, including a brand new and prized partnership with BAFTA designed to foster games development amongst the industry’s youngest and brightest stars.

During the festival BAFTA will host a range of events to promote the BAFTA Young Game Designers competition, which aims to inspire the UK’s game creators of the future by giving young people the chance to design and make their own game. Activity will include game concept workshops for 10-14-year-olds and 15-18-year-olds, guidance workshops for parents and teachers, and panel discussions about careers in the games industry.

This year, Yorkshire Games Festival can also announce that the legendary Jeff Minter of Llamasoft fame – the UK developer behind the classic 1980s games Gridrunner and Attack of the Mutant Camels, Xbox Live Arcade’s celebrated Space Giraffe, the mesmerising PlayStation Vita game TxK and most recently the mind-bending PlayStation VR title Polybius  will be attending and speaking. Jeff will be taking to the stage to talk about his incredible 30-year career, the landmark games and technology and the making of his forthcoming game Tempest 4000 for publisher Atari.

Minter is the first major name inked in for the event, with further announcements unveiling other fellow industry legends planned for the months ahead. According to Festival Director, Kathryn Penny, 2019’s event is going to build on the foundations of last year’s extravaganza, which saw 9,000 attendees head for National Science and Media Museum. That was a 15 percent jump on the inaugural year’s figures.

“It’s amazing what the Yorkshire Games Festival has achieved in just two years – 2017 really felt like a landmark year, with the line-up of acclaimed speakers helping to cement the festival as a crucial event in the games industry’s calendar,” offers Penny. “We want to continue inspiring people just starting out in their careers – or, indeed, students still studying their craft. I know the new partnership with BAFTA, plus talks from Jeff Minter and many other industry luminaries means we’ll be doing just that.”

As Penny suggests, 2019’s festival will be designed to build on the range of speakers who made their mark on the first  two events.

“We’ve had acclaimed games writers like Martin Korda talk about Destiny 2 and Rhianna Pratchett discuss Lara Croft; TT Games’ head of design Arthur Parsons, Ninja Theory’s Dominic Matthews, and designer Brenda Romero – just to name a few – on stage at the Yorkshire Games Festival,” continues Penny. “We’ve set the bar high, but we’re ready to raise it again.”

2019 sees the Yorkshire Games Festival build upon its remit to celebrate games culture and introduce a new generation to the science and art of games development. Look out for further details on confirmed speakers and additional themes and events in the coming months.

Warframe New Game Mode

DIGITAL EXTREMES DOUBLES DOWN

LONDON, ONTARIO

April 18, 2018 – Independent Canadian developer and publisher Digital Extremes is debuting the first Warframe of 2018, Khora, in tandem with Sanctuary Onslaught, a completely new team-based, survival-style game mode in the Beasts of the Sanctuary update this week for the PC version of Warframe®Beasts of the Sanctuary arriving on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this May.

Khora is a versatile dynamo of offensive and defensive power with a unique arsenal of attacks. The stylistically armor-clad Khora wields a snake-like metallic whip that strikes from a distance and commands a metallic Kavat (cat pet) that quickly engulfs enemies in a whole lot of pain. The new Sanctuary Onslaught mode, where Khora can be found, enables solo players, or a squad of up to four, to quickly dash through timed portals while blasting waves of increasingly powerful enemies. Both Khora and Sanctuary Onslaught together offer fresh new ways for Tenno to harness Warframe’s cooperative chaos, and both are free with the Beasts of the Sanctuary.

The 35th Warframe, Khora offers both deadly offensive attacks and team-oriented defensive tactics featuring four distinguished Abilities:

  • Whipclaw: Send enemies reeling with a deafening whipcrack.
  • Ensnare: Bind a hapless target in living metal, entangling others who stray too close. Disperse the trap with a crack of the whip.
  • Venari: Summon a ferocious, gleaming Kavat. Use again to cycle between Attack, Protect, and Heal postures.
  • Strangledome: Weave a dome of living chain that ensnares and strangles any enemy within, and any foolish enough to approach.

New weapons and items available for Khora include the Dartgun, Quill Spear, Tenno Revolver Rifle, Zaw Parts, Quill Syandana, and Quill Alt Helmet.

Having debuted during the bi-monthly DevStreams this March, Sanctuary Onslaught is ready for action! This new cooperative and competitive mode challenges players to work together to survive endless waves of Warframe enemies standing in their way of escaping through the next portal. Players must quickly slay enemies en masse while proceeding through uniquely crafted environments to random portals to escape – and then do it all again, all against the clock!

Play The Game! #gamesweekberlin 2018 from 23 – 29 April is expecting around 15,000 visitors..

GAMESWEEKBERLIN, 17 April, 2018.

Berlin is poised to become the capital of the games world: around 15,000 visitors are expected to attend #gamesweekberlin 2018 which will kick off Monday (23 April) with the Opening Gala and the presentation of the newly created Medienpreis Games at Säälchen (Holzmarktstr. 25) in Berlin. Twelve individual events for both gaming enthusiasts and representatives of the games industry are gathered under the umbrella brand which combines different aspects, subjects and target groups of the sector.

gamesweekberlin

Berlin as the city with the highest concentration of games companies in Germany is the ideal venue for #gamesweekberlin. An indication of the popularity of games in Germany is shown by the most recent figures from game, the association of the German games industry. In 2017, the German games market posted growth of 15% to more than 3.3 billion Euros turnover and thus surpassed the 3 billion Euros mark for the first time.

#gamesweekberlin is SEVEN DAYS PACKED WITH EVENTS DEDICATED TO GAMING, BUSINESS AND DEVELOPMENT.

At a press conference on 16 April, 2018, the organisers and partners of #gamesweekberlin introduced the extensive and wide-ranging programme of the twelve events, presented the latest figures for the sector, and also launched the new English-language platform „Games Capital Berlin“ (www.gamescapitalberlin ) which serves as an important information tool for the German and international games industry to provide information about Berlin in its role as a games hub.

eSports and More

Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of Berlin: “I hope the participants of the #gamesweekberlin will have exciting events and a good time in Berlin. The field of games is part of our city’s great innovative potential and has significantly gained in importance in recent years. This has also resulted in Berlin developing, among other things, into an important hub for eSports. But the games industry is not just about entertainment. It is also an important economic factor: according to a study commissioned by the Senate, Berlin is currently home to 140 companies in the games sector with more than 2,000 employees and 250 million Euros turnover. Berlin offers good conditions for games companies.“

Michael Liebe, CEO Booster Space & Head of #gamesweekberlin: „Ever since #gamesweekberlin was founded, we have been pursuing the goal of connecting business, technology and culture through the umbrella brand. As the organiser, we would like to see the various players meeting one another during this week and forging new contacts. The participants of the individual events may have different goals and backgrounds, but the subject of games provides a common ground for creating networks and enabling partnerships to grow. The  #gamesweekberlin brings people together!“

The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg supports #gamesweekberlin and several of its individual events. More information and tickets at www.gamesweekberlin.com .
