Star Trek Online news from Las Vegas

Watch "Star Trek Online"

The Associated Press, one of the largest news organizations in the world and an outlet for freelancing reporters to publish their stories, have published an article about Star Trek Online with Jack Emmert from Cryptic Studios.

After years in development limbo, the "Trek"- themed massively multiplayer online game will engage, according to game developer Cryptic Studios Inc.

Jack Emmert, Cryptic Chief Creative Officer, said players will begin "Star Trek Online" as the captain of a small Starfleet or Klingon Empire ship. They can customize their characters from pre-existing "Trek" species — from Klingons to Gorn — and can create entirely new alien races. As they progress through the game, players can increase in rank and gain larger vessels and more crew.

"You'll venture through space exploring new civilizations and life-forms," said Emmert. "You'll also beam down to planets and have adventures inside your ship. It's a galactic-wide game. There's going to be tons of space to investigate. We have a great system for exploration, which will allow for almost infinite possibilities."

Cryptic recently announced it had secured the rights to develop and publish "Star Trek Online" from CBS Consumer Products after now-defunct Perpetual Entertainment set the besieged project to kill.

"We had a friendly relationship with them," Emmert said. "As it became apparent they weren't going to continue to function, they decided to sell off the license. We swooped in and grabbed it. We took no assets. There was nothing to be had, to be honest. We're building everything from the ground up."

Players will also be able to battle against other vessels in laser-blasting, missile-firing deep space scuffles reminiscent of "The Wrath of Khan" and the Dominion War in "Deep Space Nine." Because the game will be set a few generations following the last "Trek" film, players shouldn't expect to run into James T. Kirk or Jean-Luc Picard.

"There might be a ship called Enterprise flying around, but it's probably not the same ship anymore," said Emmert. "Most of the characters will have either retired or passed on, but you'll definitely be going to all the places you know and love from 'Star Trek.' Expect to see oldies like Vulcan and Bajor but also fan favorites like Andoria and Qo'noS."

Emmert plans to unveil footage and more details about "Star Trek Online" — which has no release date set — with Leonard Nimoy at a "Star Trek" convention Sunday (Today)) in Las Vegas at the Gene Roddenberry Theater inside the Las Vegas Hilton. The "Star Trek Online" panel will also be broadcast live HERE .

"You're going to see the actual game working and functioning," said Emmert. "This isn't renders. This isn't concept art. Everything that people see in the trailer is going to be taken right from 'Star Trek Online' as it stands today, so hardened people should know that a release date might be closer than they think."

Cryptic, the developer originally responsible for "City of Heroes" and "City of Villains," is also working on the superhero-themed online game "Champions Online," scheduled for release for Windows PC and Xbox 360 next year. Emmert said "Star Trek Online" would definitely be available for Windows PC and perhaps Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Other online games based on popular entertainment franchises include "The Lord of the Rings Online," "The Matrix Online," "Pirates of the Caribbean Online" and "Star Wars Galaxies." Sony Online Entertainment is currently developing "DC Universe Online" while MGM Interactive is working on "Stargate Worlds."

  Space Siege Hands-on

From IGN

Gas Powered returns to its action RPG roots with this upcoming sci-fi game.
by Jason Ocampo - IGN

August 4, 2008 - After moonlighting with the real-time strategy genre with the Supreme Commander games, Gas Powered Games returns to the action role-playing genre with Space Siege. Due out later this month, Space Siege will have you face off with an army of genocidal aliens, which is a far cry from the days of hacking and slashing your way through demon and goblin hordes. And, as I discovered playing around with a near-final version of Space Siege, it's much more action-intensive than Gas Powered's earlier Dungeon Siege games.

This is an action RPG, so the focus is on killing things, collecting loot, and becoming even more powerful so you can kill bigger and badder things. It's a vicious cycle that, when done correctly, compels you to keep playing because there's always one more reward within easy grasp. As such, the plot mainly serves as a basic exposition as to why you're killing things, and Space Siege's story feels like a mishmash of sci-fi story staples. Earth is destroyed by a warlike alien race, and the remnants of humanity flee aboard massive colony vessels. You play as a robotics expert and soldier on one of these vessels which gets boarded by the aliens. After a brief battle, the human crew seals itself in their sleep chambers while the ship's AI system gasses the passageways. However, when you awaken weeks later, you discover that the aliens didn't die from the gas and have been running amok, so it's up to you to deal with them.

  IGN's PC Best of E3 2008

From the IGN PC Team

E3 2008 was a lot of things. A chance to get a first look at BioWare's Dragon Age, an opportunity to be disappointed about that one Starbucks in the Los Angeles Convention Center's South Hall being mysteriously closed, an excuse to watch The Who perform at a Rock Band party. It was all those things to us, at least.

You guys saw a bunch of previews go up on all the industry's biggest games and, if you like moving pictures, caught all our Live Wire video coverage. We did hear a few announcements, including a mention about downloadable content for Fallout 3 and the fact that Square Enix's The Last Remnant RPG is heading to this platform at some point.

One of the more interesting announcements actually happened after the show at Microsoft's GameFest 2008, where the company made it known that its Games for Windows -- Live service was going free and talked a little bit about DirectX 11. But since that wasn't actually part of the E3 event, it can't qualify for our biggest surprise category.

While we're all wondering what might happen to the show in 2009, where it might be held and in what sort of format it might take on, we're here to hand out awards to the PC games we felt the most deserving at E3 2008. Sure there's nothing particularly earth-shattering, but there are some fantastic titles being developed with fast-approaching release dates. So check below for what Jason Ocampo, Steve Butts, and Charles Onyett thought were most worthy of accolades. And if you can't tell, we kind of like Spore.

Best First-Person Shooter:
Crysis Warhead

Best MMO:
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

Best RPG:
Fallout 3

Best Strategy Game:
Spore

Runners-Up:

* Empire: Total War
* Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II or..
* Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

Games For Windows LIVE now free

from xbox360achievements.org

Previously, any PC user who wanted to play "ranked" games, earn online achievements or partake in cross-platform play (for games like Shadowrun, Universe at War and Lost Planet: Colonies) would have to pay the same monthly fee as normal Xbox 360 Live users for a Gold account, reagrdless if they even owned an Xbox 360 or not.

As of today, PC users will no longer be required to have said Gold account to receive the benefits of Xbox Live on the PC. Truly, this should have been the policy from the beginning, but I feel that Microsoft may be getting ready to push more games onto the PC and could not do so with most PC gamers currently loathing them for being charged for something they would receive for free from any other company (Valve, Blizzard, etc.). Anyone who has played a PC game until now would be hard pressed to even find an opponent using the ranked quick search. You'd have to search unranked games, as most users refused to pay for a Gold account.

This won't really affect most of us achievement whores out there who got into PC gaming for the extra achievements since we already have the Gold account from our 360, but this is great news for us regardless, as the more popular Games for Windows Live becomes, the more likely it will be for companies to add achievement functionality.

New York Governor Signs Useless Videogame Bill into Law

GamePolitics today reports that NY Governor David A. Paterson signed a new videogame bill into law...

GamePolitics has confirmed that, last night, New York Gov. David Paterson signed video game legislation passed by the Senate and Assembly into law.

FULL ARTICLE

[Commentary from Laserdisc]
What does this mean? It means once again politicians are attempting to get into the limelight by trying to push for these feel good yet do nothing laws. It's a complete waste of tax dollars and quite frankly we got bigger things to worry about like the economy, unemployment, inflation and healthcare. However those problems are just too much work for our overpaid State political system. And when the State of NY gets sued for passing an unconstitutional law and loses having to pay who knows how much... who is accountable for creating this mess? Why are they not immediately fired?

  Tropical Waters - A Garry's Mod story

OK - I am declaring myself officially obsessed with Garry's Mod. I've told a little story in pictures about defending paradise here..

Tropical Waters

The storyline starts with this..

A group of female friends has gotten away from it all in a tropical paradise that has gotten some unwanted visitors of late. The girls, not wanting to give up paradise for anybody, have armed themselves quite well with the idea of defending their paradise, for which they've paid A LOT of money. The girls were dropped off here by a seaplane piloted by a friend. They swim between the islands for exercise.

This is where the pictures start...

The images are in order of filename and more or less in story order. While a lot of people play Garry's mod for the cool gadgets you can build, I prefer people stories. I think you'll like this..

I rate this... PG13.. bordering on R.
